Buying guidelines: Although diamonds, jewelry, precious metals and gemstones may not deteriorate rapidly, they do depreciate quickly. Just as you can't sell a used car for the same price as a new one, pre-owned jewelry and gems sell for substantially less than new. Our everyday prices are typically below other stores' discounted prices. On pre-owned items, usually we sell for half the price of new, and buy at half of what we sell for. This is the norm -- the market reality for ethical resale jewelers. If you know what you paid for something, or have an appraisal for its insurance replacement value, it can be distressing to learn that the cash value of your item is on average only 20-25 % of what you originally paid. That is why we prefer to have you obtain competing offers before you come to us -- you will be better able to understand the fairness of our offer. We consider each item individually, and buy based on our anticipated ability to dispose of the item at a profit. As a matter of integrity, we pledge to disclose to the seller any special factors we perceive as affecting resale value, and to make a reasonable offer for items we are interested in buying. In the rare case when subsequent research determines rarity or value not known at the time of purchase, it is our practice to voluntarily make additional payment to the seller based on this higher value. Trade-Ins: The same items we buy for cash, can often be taken on trade-in. The form of payment to you is a credit memo that can be applied to any purchase at Wooden Skate. The dollar value of the credit memo will typically be higher than the amount of cash offered, making trade-ins advantageous to those who may wish to purchase antiques or jewelry from us.
